The FSA Pak workshop series is designed to supplement your school’s current science curriculum by using hands-on experiments and exciting demonstrations to introduce students to the four FSA elementary science content areas.   We offer two options: a four-week overview and an eight -week in-depth program. The four-week overview is designed to highlight the most difficult concepts in each subject area; with different standards being covered in each hour-long session. The eight-week program details all the concepts for each standard with double the content including multiple experiments and demonstrations that convey the details of the four subject areas

How does the FSA Pak work?

The FSA Pak is a series of one-hour workshops that utilize fun, hands-on science to teach 4th and 5th graders the four FSA content areas of science tested for in 5th grade. In each workshop, Mad Science experiments and demonstrations are used to help students grasp the standards outlined in Florida Department of Education’s Sunshine Sate Standards. Each workshop includes:

  • Embedded FSA sample questions in workshop activities and demonstrations
  • Pre & Post Activity Resource guides for teachers delivered prior to each session
  • Pre and Post workshop FSA sample quizzes to gauge concept retention
  • Post workshop summaries for teachers - to review concepts with students
  • Student take-homes with every session to get the whole family involved and reinforce the concepts presented
  • “What we learned” and “Lets try this at home” take home cards for all students every session

With a 10 week series we include an exciting assembly to kick-off the program for students involved

Does the FSA Pak replace classroom instruction?

No! We can help teachers by bringing fun science to the students, but nothing can substitute for ongoing learning in a classroom.  The FSA Pak is designed to supplement classroom instruction by emphasizing hands-on fun learning aimed at the specific FSA standards. Our aim is to help improve your achievement as measured on the FSA test but our more intrinsic goal for this program is to get your students to become excited about learning - to have fun with science and to get them to look at the world around them just a little bit differently.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________

Why should we use the FSA Pak in our school?

Anyone who has spent more than five minutes with fourth and fifth graders knows how long their attention spans… Get the picture? Programs that use different methods of teaching get through to students; we use visual, tactile, and auditory teaching methods in our inquiry-based workshops. Students “experience” the FSA objectives, not just hear about them for as little as $6 per student per hour.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________

What if we can’t spare the time?

We will work with your needs! Ideally, the sessions should be conducted during class time so that all students have the opportunity to be involved. However, we can conduct before or after school sessions, schedule individual objective workshops, or customize programs. Just ask!

Mad Science FSA Pak Workshop Correlations

The Science portion of the FSA test assesses the achievement of the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards in four major subject areas. Approximately the same number of questions are used in each content area. These areas are:

1.     Scientific Thinking

a.     Big Idea 1: The Practice of Science

b.     Big Idea 2: The Characteristics of Scientific Knowledge

2.     Life & Environmental Science

a.     Big Idea 14: Organization and Development of Living Organisms

b.     Big Idea 15: Diversity and Evolution of Living Organisms

c.     Big Idea 17: Interdependence

3.     Earth & Space Science

a.     Big Idea 5: Earth in Space and Time

b.     Big Idea 7: Earth Systems and Patterns

4.     Physical & Chemical Science

a.     Big Idea 8: Properties of Matter

b.     Big Idea 9: Changes in Matter

c.     Big Idea 10: Forms of Energy

d.     Big Idea 11: Energy Transfer & Transformations

The FSA Pak workshops address these content areas using hands-on activities, and fun interactive demonstrations. Sample past FSA questions are embedded throughout each workshop to assess knowledge achievement and fun take home projects reinforce what was learned. All workshops are one hour in length and immerse students in the scientific method throughout. (Big Ideas 1 & 2). The complete 10 week series is listed below followed by the benchmarks they address. The first 5 workshops are offered as the condensed overview series. Our normal format is to come to your school 1 - 2 days each week and rotate through all your 5th and/or 4th grade classes.

* Matter Mix It Up - Explore atoms & molecules, and some dramatic differences between physical & chemical changes, make surprising solutions mad mixtures and SLIME to take home. NGSSS - SC.5.P.8.1 – 4 and SC.5.P.9.1

 * Moving Motion - Action equals reaction in this “moving” session. Discover how force creates movement and Buckle up for a spectacular demo of these forces with a hovercraft ride for all interested pilots.  NGSSS - SC.5.P.10.2, and SC.5.P.13.1 - 4

 * Walloping Weather - Explore how weather including hurricanes develop, and how powerful they can be! Junior meteorologists will be make forecasts, and explore just how important our oceans are. They consult their take home UV detectors for harmful sun and become experts in hurricane preparedness NGSSS - SC.5.E.7.2 – 7

 * Ecosystems - Investigate the interconnections present in nature. Students will build ecosystem models, and explore the elements of energy webs, and food chains. They will reflect on how humans impact ecosystems, and use field journals for everyday explorationsNGSSS -  SC.5.L.14.2 and SC.5.L.15.1, and SC.5.L.17.2

 * Body Basics - Study the science of your insides by learning about the major systems of the human body. Get gross with our “digestomania” and try on your cool Body parts Anatomy Apron. NGSSS - SC.5.L.14.1–2.

Dry Ice Capades - Explore the 3 states of matter and the changes of state. Turn liquids to solids in seconds, create bubbling potions and a huge fog storm and explore what heat can do to matter.  NGSSS - SC.5.P.8.1 – 2 & SC.5.E.7.1

Energy Burst! - Explore the various forms of energy, and how energy can be transferred and transformed. Take home rattlesnake eggs and BOINKs powered by energy — and scare your friends. NGSSS - SC.5.P.10.1 & 2

Electricity – Current Events – Get ready for a hair raising experience as we ride the electron highway and explore static, test materials for conductivity, make indoor lightning, and create circuits.  NGSSS - SC.5.P.10.3 - 4, and SC.5.P.11.1 – 2,

Earth Science -  Investigate the powerful processes that shape the planet and form remarkable rocks, and magnificent minerals. Build and take home sedimentary stackers. NGSSS - SC.4.E.6.2 – 4

Space… The Final Frontier -  Our space  mission: to take an exciting look at planets, moons, comets, and the stars and other space phenomena (Space suits not required.)  We will explore our sun, moon, solar system, and discover the riddle of our seasons in this “mad” planetary tour! NGSSS - SC.5.E.5.1 – 3.

 * - designates workshop offered in five week overview series.
